A total of fifteen Nethermoss Archers attended a weekend of competitive shooting at the Cheshire County Bowmen’s open Portsmouth rounds. The Competition’s were held at the Upton Sports and Leisure Centre, near Chester. Day one of the weekends shoot was an Individual event; this was attended by three of our junior members, namely Harrison Moss, Oliver Johnston, and Jack Grogan. Considering Oliver & Harrison were shooting against junior Archers who were up to five years older, and more experienced than themselves, they shot very well finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Jack, in his final year of shooting as a junior at this event, won the first place trophy for the third year in succession. We have no doubt that another Nethermoss Junior will be taking over from Jack , by
bringing the trophy home next year. Three of our senior members also attended on the day, being Janet Calderbank, Debbie Brown, and John Batt. Debbie was succesful in winning the second place ladies recurve medal, and although Janet and John didn’t make it to the medal positions they both enjoyed the well organised shoot.
Day two of the weekends shoot was the team event. Nethermoss entered teams in the Compound, Longbow, and Recurve categories, each team consisting of four members. Unfortunately the compound team consisting of Michelle & Paul Blundell, Melanie hoe, and Kirsty Robb, did
not win a podium position, but Mel was rewarded with a medal for achieving the second highest lady Compound score of the day. It was the same for the Longbow team of Tracey & Ian Scott, Pat Moss, and Barry Hignet. Although they never got placed, Queen of the Longbows Tracey Scott was called to the awards table to collect the medal for the highest scoring Lady Longbow archer of the day.
Tony Hoe, Dave Ball, Nigel Kerr, and Jack Grogan made up the recurve team. They all shot within a few points of each other, and received medals for being placed in second position.
Being a regular highlighted in the sports pages of the local news papers for his archery skills, junior Nethermoss Archer Jack Grogan was shortlisted in the ‘Advertiser’ sports personality of the year awards. Jack along with his family was asked to attend the annual award ceremony at the Rose Theatre, in the grounds of Edge Hill University. On arrival they were invited to eat from the large buffet that was provided before the presentation ceremony began. Suitably fed they were then guided to the Theatre where the awards were to be presented.
It was quite a large presentation which was narrated by a local radio presenter who gave a brief description as to each nominee’s
reason as to why they were shortlisted for the awards. The junior Sports Personality was the first to be presented, and five junior sports
personality’s had their names read out. The winner was then called down to be presented with the trophy. Unfortunately it wasn’t Jack who had won; but he was not too disappointed though, as he was honoured to be nominated for the award in the first place, and the icing on the cake was that he was presented with a personalised runner up Trophy.
At the end of the presentation Jack had the pleasure of meeting Joe Thomas the sports reporter who put Jack on the ‘Advertisers’ sports pages, which led to Jack being shortlisted for the award.
Ken Hoult passed away unexpectedly in the early hours of Friday morning 21st October. He was a valued member of both Nethermoss and High Elm Archery Clubs’ which are within the Lancashire Archery Association.
Ken’s love of Archery started when he lived in Shropshire, and along with his wife Joan, became long serving members of Shrewsbury Archery Club. Moving back up to their home area of Merseyside, they both joined Nethermoss Archers, Ken also joined High Elm Archers, and continued to be a member of both clubs until his demise. His technical knowledge was second to none, it was a knowledge he freely and enthusiastically shared with anyone. Over his last few months, Ken moved over to shooting compound which he soon mastered to become Nethermoss Club Champion 2011. He was looking forward to entering many of the indoor
competitions over the 2011 – 2012 season with his newly bought compound bow, but sadly he shot his last arrows before he had a chance to compete at the tournaments.
A great archer, with a wealth of technical knowledge, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Joan.
